Teaching with technology and personalizing learning with choice is essential to Klein ISD learners because many students have already "checked out" by intermediate/middle school level because they may not see education as important or relevant to their lives. Others learn more quickly (not challenged) or at a slower pace (needing more support). We want our learners to embrace challenges and think critically, and while this can be done with traditional methods, students may be more engaged using technology and choice. Instructional methods like choice menus can help students develop problem-solving skills in context of the content and can utilize student interest and ownership to encourage engagement with the content. Technology allows our students to collaborate and learn from their peers and it allows the teacher to assess learning more quickly and provide feedback to encourage student growth and provide targeted support for learners.

There are so many resources for social studies when using technology in the classroom. Using technology and menus gives the student's a choice and to take ownership in their education and to become the life long learners and explorers that Klein is striving for with each student.
ReplyDeleteI agree with both of the above comments. Technology keeps the students engaged and resources are endless. I can help but think back to when I was a student doing a history report. All we had back then were Encyclopedias! One of the problems we have in elementary school is the availability of technology since we are not 1 to 1 yet. So we have some limitations on how much technology we can use.

Personalized learning will keep the student engaged, and also teach them to pace themselves at a pace which is optimal for their learning style. ReplyDeleteI like this outlook I was always one of those kids that hated to draw or create art work because I was never good at it but give me a windows media or powerpoint and I could rock it all day long. With tech being essential to our student's lives it is important to use it in our classroom as well.

DeleteI agree because I had many students complain about having to complete projects hat required drawing with the excuse that they are not good at it, Technology allows for all students to turn in better quality assignments which motivates them. For example for our profile of a leader it states that students should have, "a relentless pursuit of success, [and] an unwavering commitment to serve others". Isn't that what they are doing by using technology and creating new information for the masses. They use their knowledge that they have gathered and put it into an easier to understand and meaningful, for them, product.

The "Why Teach with Technology" article touches on how technology allows students to freely collaborate. This is essential in the work place that students learn this skill on the use of a computer. Collaboration today looks different than it did ten year ago without the technology we have available now. Additionally, that goes right along with the promise to purpose theme Klein ISD has take. If we are promising that they will be future ready when they exit high school, we need to ensure that students are immersed in technology everyday, like they will be in the working world. Additionally, technology allows us to personalize learning in order to differentiate for different learners. This also is a goal of Klein ISD.

ReplyDeleteI think the C-R-C-D framework is important because their ideas are important, but if you add them to the ideas of other students, they can come up with something much bigger than themselves. The final product can be that much better. It also helps students by making them realize that they don't have to reinvent the wheel. You need to give credit where credit is due, however, you are not alone and you can use the ideas, mistakes and successes of others to help you with your own ideas. Choice menus are vital because it is an easy way to hit the learning styles of multiple students without leaving anyone out. It gets students invested in their learning.
I agree. Addressing the learning styles of students is necessary in both engaging them in learning, as well as assessing what they have learned. Students have different strengths. If they have a choice in how they showcase what they know, the teacher has a clearer understanding of content mastery.

ReplyDeleteI think that using the framework and choice menus will fulfill part of our promise to purpose vision of a learner. By having access to technology and resources, students have the opportunity to learn at their own pace. They can collaborate with others and make personal connections with the content taught. Students are able to choose which areas to focus in on and have ownership of their learning.
Teaching with technology and personalizing learning with choice is essential to Klein ISD learners because it better engages the students, and it provides a great way for meeting the needs of each individual student. Students have a strong connection with technology, so it is a powerful tool that can immediately grab their attention. Technology also has many advantages including being able to give immediate feedback. By getting immediate feedback teachers are better prepared to identify student strengths and weaknesses which provides a great way of personalizing instruction.

Teaching with technology is a great tool, and is sometimes essential to learners in that it can provide some fun practice and engage learners. Reading & writing a foreign language is one thing. However, in the foreign language classroom, ACTFL expects students to meet proficiency standards to be able to engage in oral exchanges, provide & obtain information using words, phrases or sentences and demonstrate an understanding of spoken language. So my classroom is mainly audio-lingual. Beginning French students cannot read the language & pronounce it correctly, as French is not read how it is said. Therefore, technology, when used in the class, as needed, can help with the reading & writing elements or offer Quizlets or other forms of practice for those with learning gaps. As their French improves, we plan to post videos of them speaking. Again, it's a great tool, when used wisely. It allows for different learning styles and more engagement on other proficiency levels in the target language.
I think technology offers so many resources for the students to research and gives them new ways to learn. Technology allows for collaboration and helps personalize lessons. It also helps students stay motivated to learn, as they are drawn to technology. It is an essential part of the KISD motto: Promise to purpose. ---Leticia Pierce Orsoni

Our students' lives are centered around technology. It is very hard for students to go from the fast-paced, animated thinking tech offers to the slow inanimate pen and paper. Incorporating technology in the classroom with traditional learning, offers students variations in acquiring and demonstrating knowledge. It gives them choices that allow them to "show what they know" in ways that are aspiring to them which in turn creates a safe, student centered learning environment.

ReplyDeleteTeaching with technology is imperative to today's classroom in order to prepare students for the "real" world, which is now a cyber world. While students of today have never known a world without computer technology, applying that knowledge academically or in a workplace setting requires a different skill set. This addresses the "equipped scholar" portion of the profile of a KISD learner.

I agree that some students transfer into Klein from other districts with very basic technology skills. Teaching students to be tech savvy is something that will benefit them their entire life.

Technology really assists to personalize learning because students can work from where they are. Websites like quizlet allow students to hear vocabulary words pronounced and students can start with flashcards or move to competitive games. Using a learning menu like the video would be helpful review of a unit and allow students creativity and choice versus just giving a review sheet and a test. It also can better demonstrate mastery of a topic.
